Mr. Alfred Davis

Alfred Davis was born on April 16, 1926 in Nash County, Whitakers, North Carolina to the union of Alfred and Lula Era Thorne Davis. He was the eldest of five children. Alfred accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Whitakers where he remained an active member until leaving North Carolina. He received his formal elementary and secondary education in the Edgecomb Public School in North Carolina. Following his graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy at the end of World War II. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and continued his education at Milwaukee Area Technical College focusing on math and electronics. After living in Milwaukee for a short time, he continued to enrich his spiritual growth and attended church whenever possible. He united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church located on 10th and Brown Street, where he met Avistine Jean White. Following a brief courtship, they united in holy matrimony in 1954. Their union was blessed with a son Dr. Alfred Gregory Davis. In the early 1950's, Alfred was employed at Allis Chalmers and later at the United States Postal Services. He retired in 1999. In 1985 the Mt. Zion Child Development Center was started led by the vision of Pastor Louis E. Sibley, III. Alfred was one of the founding board members and played a key role in the startup and ongoing success of the center. He served as assistant treasurer of the board and was an extremely LOYAL VOLUNTEER, from its early beginning until his health failed. Alfred also served as the leader of the Mt. Zion Food Pantry for over a decade. A Ministry he was very fond of and without fail could be seen working in the pantry on the third Thursdays of each month and/or shopping at local markets for the best bargains. He continued to serve as leader of the pantry until December 2017. Alfred was active in other Church Ministries and Community Organizations. His church involvements included, a founding board member and Chairperson of the Atlas Building, the Benevolent Committee Chairperson, a former Trustee, Laymen's Ministry, and a member of the Church Credit Union. He was passionately known by many as the "Lemonade Man" for his special lemonade, which was labeled "Marvelous" by the children in the Mt. Zion Child Development Center. His community affiliations included MICAH, The American Red Cross, The Rescue Mission, where he participated in feeding the homeless and community on Thanksgiving and Christmas. This was an event he was very fond of and would talk about the event for weeks ahead of the holidays. He was also an active member of the American Legion, just to name a few. He was a man who took his personal commitments very seriously, always looking to help someone in need and share his blessings. He was a devoted and reliable "Servant" in the Church and in the Community. On Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the age of 92, Alfred went to be with his Lord and Savior. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lula Era Thorne Davis, his loving wife, Avistine Jean, sister, Margaret Davis-Goodwyn, brothers: Henry and Elbert Davis, daughter-in-law, Michele R. Brown Davis, sister-in-law, Sharlie Love, and brother-in- law, Alvin Williams. Precious memories will be cherished by his son, Dr. Alfred Gregory Davis of Long Valley, NJ, two granddaughters: Jasmine Noelle Davis of New York City, a recent graduate from Wellesley College, and Jada Nicoe Davis, a student at Cornell University in New York, his brother: Warren C. Davis of Atlanta, GA, five sisters- in- law: Claretha M. Davis of Tampa, FL, Shirley A. Manns, Dorothy S. (Michael) Malone, Carolyn (Franklin) McIntosh all of Milwaukee, WI, and Linda M. Tate of Houston, TX, one brother- in-law: Richard J. Tate Jr. of Milwaukee, WI, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. Alfred shared a special bond with niece Gina Sikoutris of Brooklyn, NY whom he had the distinct pleasure of walking down the aisle 32 years ago.
