Ms. Anna Mae Wilson Robertson

Mother Anna Mae Wilson Robertson was born Anna Mae Wilson on March 5, 1924, in Sledge, Mississippi, to Hazel Ward and Frank Wilson. She had one sibling, a younger brother, Zerdee Griffen. Mother Robertson married John D. Robertson. Their union was blessed with eight children: Janice Banyard, Denise Muhammad (Sultan Muhammad), Sheree Robertson, Dawn Robertson, Melody Hendrix, Regina Robertson, Angela Robertson, and John D. Robertson, Jr. Mother Robertson and her brother were orphaned after their mother died when they were young. In her late teens, she enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, a/k/a Women's Army Corps (WAC), in March 1943 to become self-sufficient and to serve her country during World War II. Mother Robertson was a member of the WAC unit, 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the United States Army's first all- female, predominately African American battalion to serve overseas during World War II. The battalion's duty was to sort and redirect a backlog of mail, about 17 million pieces, in Birmingham, England, and in Rouen, France. Mother Robertson was honorably discharged from the Army in December 1945. In 1946, Evelyn Ross, a member of the battalion, invited her to Milwaukee to attend a wedding. She traveled to Milwaukee for the wedding, liked the city and stayed. Mother Robertson had a nurturing and caring spirit. After moving to Milwaukee, she worked for Woods Hospital, a/k/a Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration and Medical Center, as a nurse's aide, a/k/a certified nursing assistant, caring for sick veterans. She also worked for the Milwaukee County Hospital and St. Camillus in similar positions, caring for the sick. Mother Robertson accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age in Osceola, Arkansas, where she was raised. She attended school in that city. After she moved to Milwaukee, Mother Robertson attended Westside Church of God in Christ. At the time of her passing, Mother Robertson was a member of Tabernacle Community Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Donna Childs where she continued to grow in Christ. She was appointed as a Mother of the church. Mother Robertson received numerous honors and awards. • In March 2022, President Joseph Biden signed legislation into law awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the 6888th battalion. • In November 2019, the American Veterans Center presented Mother Robertson with the American Valor award, which honors and recognizes military heroes/sheroes. • In 2014, she received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Women's Army Corps Service Medal, and the World War II Medal. Mother Robertson was a mother without complaints who dedicated and focused her life on raising her eight children. She made sacrifices for them and taught them life lessons. Mother Robertson also assisted in caring for some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren are part of her legacy. Mother Robertson was a resilient woman. Mother Robertson was raised in the segregated South under Jim Crow laws . While living in Milwaukee, she actively demonstrated her opposition to racial injustice and racial segregation by taking her eight children on open housing marches in Milwaukee in 1960s. She enjoyed watching sporting events on television, like basketball, football and other athletic competitions. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren's basketball and football games. Mother Robertson enjoyed cooking, baking and serving Sunday dinner in her home until she was in her early 90s. Mother Robertson was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. Mother Robertson had an easy-going personality, which she showed inside her home and outside of it. She carried that spirit throughout her life. Mother Robertson simply got along well with everyone. And, she had a beautiful simile that would light up a room. The Lord called Mother Robertson home on May 30, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, great grandson, Kevin Michael Pittman Jr., granddaughter, Precious Banyard, and great-great granddaughter Taylor Mickey. Mother Robertson leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, grandchildren, Monalisa, Kenya, Kemba, Tic. Kennetta, Kenneth, Jr.. Dyresha (Brandon), Alpacino (Tiara), Anthony (Toni), Luther III (Sharmila), John, Danella, Melissa, Tommie, Shiro, Jaelynn, and Jonathan. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a special nephew, Lamont Gregory, cousins, family, friends, and her Tabernacle family. Mother Robertson relied on her faith and trust in her Lord and her Savior as she journeyed through life.
