Mrs. Beatrice Rae Hicks

Beatrice Rae Hicks was born January 29, 1942, to Emma and Willie Hood. She had a second birthday which was celebrated on March 4th. Beatrice lived her young life in Marks, MS with her eight siblings. Beatrice met her husband, Henry Hicks Jr., and to this union they welcomed 7 children and 1 stepson: Rosie L. Hicks, Johnny Hicks, Clarence Hicks, Henry Hicks III, Edna M. Hicks (Covington), Curtis Hicks, Robert E. Hicks, and Jimmy D. Williams. While she had always been a homemaker, she worked at Bel Air Nursing Home for many years until she retired. She joined the Cross Lutheran Church Family where she helped prepare food to serve the homeless once or twice a week. . She loved helping others, listening to the blues, dancing, cooking, spending time with her family, eating ice cream, scratching lottery tickets, playing "Deuces Wild", and watching old cowboy shows and game shows including Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Let's Make a Deal. Though she was totally done looking after her grandchildren, she took pride in helping her granddaughter, Tammy, by babysitting her 2 children until they could watch themselves. She gave them the nicknames "Tuda Bug" and "Boot". She gave anyone she knew a new or a chopped-up version of their original name. There was a time she loved to watch basketball and could talk to you about it even if she didn't understand all the plays. She was very funny; you just never knew what she'd say. She was very caring and there wasn't anything that she wouldn't do for her family. Beatrice Rae Hicks (81) passed away peacefully on October 4,2023, with her daughter, Edna, by her side. She was preceded in death by her: children, Henry (Pee Wee), Robert, and Johnny (Charlie Weaver); granddaughter, Latoya Hicks; siblings, Emma Martin, Roosevelt Hood, James Hood, Charlie Hood, and Roy Hood; sister-in-law, Rosie Hicks; and brothers-in-law, Archie Hicks and Willie Collins. Beatrice is survived by her: husband, Henry; 2 daughters, Rosie and Edna; 2 sons, Clarence and Curtis; 1 stepson, Jimmy, all of Milwaukee, WI; sisters, Ara (Mary) Gant, Lucy Mae Wilson, and Rosie Lee Anderson; sisters-in-law, Margite Lucas and Mary Jackson; brother-in-law; Johnny Hicks; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Dr. Lisa A. Sullivan Vedder, who cared for Beatrice for many years, and the St. Ann Center, where she attended the adult daycare. Extra special thanks to her daughter, Rosie. She was her hands-on caregiver throughout the years, day in and out. She cared for her, groomed her, prepared her meals, took her to doctor appointments, and the list could go on. She's a great example of a selfless person. There wasn't anything that she wouldn't do for her mom. It was and is greatly appreciated.
