Mrs. Betty Jean Stephens

Betty Jean, “Ms. Betty” (Stephens), age 77, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin entered eternal life on April 30, 2020 surrounded by her family. Betty was born on March 18, 1943 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was the oldest of eight children. At an early age, Betty confessed a hope in Christ and continued in her walk with God. She was a graduate of Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and received her Bachelors degree from Winston-Salem University in 1967. Her teaching career began in Statesville, North Carolina. Later, she married Kemphus Stephens on August 9, 1969 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The couple subsequently moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to start a family. Betty taught physical and health education in the Milwaukee Public School System for 30 years. She continued to mentor and tutor many children while being a member at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Betty was affectionately known as “Ms. Betty” to those who were blessed by her wisdom and humor. Betty was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, mother, special friend, grandmother, and so much more. Her positive, strong spirit was amazing to everyone that she met. Betty’s favorite sayings were “Thank you Jesus for this day” and “I am a blessed woman.” She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling, baseball, tennis, and golf. She also loved traveling, reading, and spending time with her family. Betty has been a pillar in her family and community and often gave advice and love to those around her. Ms. Betty will remain the matriarch of her family and her legacy includes lessons about the significance of demonstrating Christ’s love. Betty entered heaven unbroken and victorious. She gracefully overcame every challenge and gave God all the glory. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Enlow Byrd; her sister, Jessie Byrd; and brother, Enlow Byrd Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory:her husband of 50 years Kemphus Stephens; daughter, Erica Johnson; son, Kerric Stephens; daughter sisters, Jacqueline E. Byrd (Calvin); Jacqueline J. Byrd-Harris (Boyce); sister, Barbara Bennett; brothers, Melvin Nash (Cynthia); Nathaniel Nash; Alvin Nash (Jewel); grandchildren, Lawson Adams, Gene Johnson, Alexia Johnson; godmother, Mary Lee Holmes; cousins, Margaret Drummond; Odessa Gaither; and a host of special cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends. Northwest Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. "The homegoing celebration for Betty Stephens will be on Friday, May 8, 2020 from 4-6 pm. Viewing will be allowed until 5pm. The family will have a private service from 5-6pm."
