THE JOURNEY...A TIME TO BEGIN...CARRIE B. MILES was born on January 29, 1919, to the union of Jessie James Butcher and Carrie (McClain) Butcher, in Grady, Arkansas. Carrie received her formal education in the Public School System of Grady, Arkansas...A TIME TO CHOOSE...Carrie accepted Christ as her Savior, at the age of 12 and was united with Kings Highway Baptist Church, where she served as a member, under the leadership of Pastor Al King. Carrie joined Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, in 1953, under the leadership of the late Rev. E.M. Kelly Sr., where she was an active member...A TIME TO BUILD...Thanks to longtime friend, the late Arthur Barnes, Carrie was introduced to the late Charles Miles. They were united in holy matrimony on November 24, 1953, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Faye and Diane...A TIME TO WORK...Carrie was employed, as a female defense factory worker, during World War II and also, worked as a nanny in Oakland, California. She was later employed as a private, well respected nanny and housekeeper, in Milwaukee for the Kravit family for over forty years, until retirement...A TIME TO LIVE...In her leisure, Carrie was an avid gardener, along with her husband, Charles Miles. They received beautification awards for the beautiful yard and flowers, that adorned their home each year. She enjoyed hosting rummage sales, with her friends. Carrie loved to sing in the choir and participated in various church functions and activities. She also enjoyed traveling and vacationing. Carrie was a seamstress and had signature attire such as hats, shoes, and clothing, which was admired by both young and old. Carrie served her community and neighborhood faithfully. She was fondly known as the "Mayor of the Block". She could be heard saying often, "How you gon' show me the city, when I'm the Mayor of the Town!". Carrie had a way of showing you love and "getting you told", in the same sentence and because of this, she captured the hearts of many...A TIME TO SPREAD WISDOM...Carrie Miles has truly been a trailblazer and leader of Metropolitan Church, for 64 years. She has served as President of the Gospel Chorus, a member of the Willing Worker's Circle and the Gladys East Missionary Circle. She was a founding member of the Mary Emmon's Tea Event, hosted the Heaven and Hell Feast and the play, "Rocking Chair Ministry", just to name a few. She spoke fondly of participating in well-known fundraising events by cooking and selling chicken dinners, back in the day to raise money for the church. She was an active member of the Mother's Board, frequently giving her testimony and sharing wise and thoughtful words. Sister Miles has won numerous plaques and awards from Metropolitan Church...A TIME FOR THE JOURNEY TO END...Carrie B. Miles peacefully transitioned from this earth, to receive her crown, on October 1, 2017, at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her: husband, Charles Miles; parents, Jessie J. and Carrie Butcher; sister: Earnestine Ward, Florene Trotter, Arlena Perteet, Margaret Green and Jerlean Lites; and brother, James Butcher and Sylvester Butcher...A TIME TO CHERISH... She leaves to cherish her memory her: two loving daughters, Faye Graham (Wendell) Floyd of Chicago, IL and Diane D. (Robert) Sowell Hunt of Milwaukee, WI; two grandchildren, DaShan L. (John) Sowell-Williams of Stone Mountain, GA and Wendell Danton Floyd of Chicago, IL; three great-grandchildren: Aaron C. Jones II, Bryanna A. Jones and Johnathyn L. M. Williams of Stone Mountain, GA; a dear sister, Bernice Rogers of Milwaukee, WI; and brother, Leo Butcher of Chicago, IL; a host of nieces, nephews, God-children, relatives, friends and the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church family. Carrie also, had two "special daughters", Janice Dickinson and Diane Wilkes.
