Mrs. Christine Carter

Christine Carter, affectionately known as "Bobbie" to her grandchildren and "Momma" to many others, passed away to Eternal life on December 1, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was born on February 26, 1930 to the union of Jerry and Gertrude Mayfield in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Christine received her formal education in the Milwaukee Public School system, attending 9th Street School, Roosevelt Jr. High School, and graduated from Lincoln High School. She played softball at Lapham Park, and in the summers, she traveled to Waukegan, IL to play softball there. Christine Mayfield was united in holy matrimony with Louis C. Carter on July 17, 1948 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their union was blessed with five children - Janice, Wayne, Karen, Lisa, and Michelle. Christine accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age uniting with St. Mary's Baptist Church (now Lamb of God) where she was a faithful member for over 50+ years. During this time, she served as a Senior Usher, Youth Usher Supervisor, and Church Secretary. She was also a member of the United Ushers. She was very honored to be appointed to the Mother's Board. Until her health failed her, Christine was "dressed and ready to go" to church on Sunday and Bible Study on Wednesday night. Christine was employed by Milwaukee Public Schools Food Service and ].C. Penney until she had to retire to care for her husband, Louis and mother. In her leisure, she enjoyed baking (her carrot and German chocolate cakes were the best), visiting friends and family, doing puzzles, reading, and gardening. She was a member for many years of several bowling leagues, the Walnut Street Social Gathering, Women of Craft, and Y's Menettes. She enjoyed dressing up and attending the Cosmopolitan Balls, and she was a "sharp" dresser herself. Family was very important to Christine. Whenever she learned of a family reunion, she was there and encouraged others to go also. On December 1, 2017 the Lord dispatched his angels from heaven and called her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. Carter; daughter, Janice Rahming; parents, Jerry and Gertrude Mayfield; sister, Elizabeth Pope; and brothers, Leon Mayfield and Oscar Mayfield. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Karen Nalls, Lisa (Elijah) Handy, and Michelle Carter; son, Wayne Carter, Sr (Carla Tate); grandchildren, Sonia, Jada, Wayne [r., Candace, Cameron, Kesha, and Nicole; great-grandchildren, Darius, Quentin, Makayla, Travion, Jacoby, Jarron, Aeron, and DJ; godchildren, Aisha Lucas and Demone Threat; loving family members the Pope's and Boston's; childhood friends, Sally Jackson and Maxine Harrell; adopted daughters, Alice Love and Martha Luckett; extended families, Riley, Mack, Jones, and Putnam/Danley, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
