Mrs. Emma Lou Hooks

Emma Lou was born to Ethel (nee Williams) and Tom Lipscomb on April 13, 1923 in Mississippi. She was 'the baby' and was so very loved by her parents and siblings that the name stuck and she was called 'the baby' while she was growing up. Emma, also known as "Tootsie" spent her adolescent years in Mississippi and Alabama, where she moved with her Mom; brother, Sam; and sister, Sue, after their father passed away. Emma was fun loving, but was also a hard worker. While attending school as a young girl, she also worked in the fields and helped her Mom at home. Emma met and fell in love with Nathaniel Hooks, a handsome and hard-working young man who had served in the Navy during WWII. After tying the knot in 1946, they moved to Chicago, where Nat found work in a factory and Emma worked as a waitress at Walgreen's. After starting their family in 1948, Emma and Nat moved to Milwaukee, where they had four more children. Emma was a stay at home Mom until the younger kids were in school full time. She worked at the Shorecrest Hotel for several years, and later became employed as a Custodian at MPS, from where she retired in 1988. Emma enjoyed singing, fishing, playing cards, and going to bingo; but more than that, she loved and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Emma professed Christian beliefs early in life and found spiritual consolation and fulfilment in the Catholic faith. She was active with St. Bernadette's Parish until her illness began to take a toll on her health. However, she maintained a strong sense of faith and was always mindful of the presence of the Savior. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her husband. Emma is deeply loved and will be missed by her devoted children, Delores (and her husband, Melvin) Parr; Marcus Hooks, Sr., (and his wife, Mildred); Myron Hooks I, Terry Hooks, Sr., and Nadean Hooks. Her presence will also be missed by grandchildren: Tyron, Gwen, Alisha, Gabriella, Benjamin, and Marcus Hooks, Jr., TaSonia Hooks-Hendrix, Chauncey Hooks; Eric Parr, Sr., Melvin Parr, Jr. Vivian Hooks-Pyles, Myron Hooks II, Tinieka, Shavonna, Terrica, Hattie, Terrence, and Terry Hooks, [r., Zitelka, Jon, and Carmen Parr-Dames, Patrice Beiersdorf, and Michael Huddleston. Emma is also survived by 28 great-grandchildren; 7 great- great grandchildren; special friends, Leora McCrary, Dawn Truitt, Lula Tate, and Patricia Graham; special caregiver, Glenda Collins; special cousins, Katie Jackson and Willette Mann; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
