Mother Ethel Lee Davis

Ethel Lee Robinson Davis was born on July 11, 1928, to the union of Volman and Bessie Robinson in Marks, Mississippi. Ethel received her formal education within the Quitman County School System. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age while residing in Marks, MS. In 1946, Ethel Lee Robinson was united in holy matrimony with Hugh West Davis Sr. Theil' union was blessed with six children. Shortly after, during the Great Migration from the South, she and her husband moved to Cairo, Illinois. Later, they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "Et Lee" (the name she was affectionally called by family and friends) and her husband were the first relatives to move from the South to the North. After they settled in, they graciously welcomed other family groups from the South into their home. While in Milwaukee, Ethel joined Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful and diligent servant of the Lord, serving at Mount Carmel for over 70 yyars. Mother Davis was president of the Kitchen Committee, and held memberships on the Mothers' Board, Missionary Society, and Pastor's Aide Club. She also served as an usher, nurse ard choir member, Mother Davis rarely missed Sunday School or evening Bible Study. She was an articulate orator and would recite The Creation (by James Weldon Johnson) at special church programs. Mother Davis was active in the General Baptist State Convention of Wisconsin. She was a student of Christian doctrine, studying to "show herself approved". Mother Davis took the Congress of Christian Education courses whenever the Congress convened. She was a member in the State's Woman's Auxiliary and the National Baptist Convention, USA. Mother Davis attended Milwaukee Area Technical College, where she excelled 'n sewing. She was an excellent quilter and spent most of her time quitting. Over the years, each of her six children received two of her unique and beautiful quilts. Mother Davis loved to travel. She was the first woman in her immediate and expanded family to travel extensively. This inspired future generations in the family to experience the personal fulfillments of traveling. While traveling by plane, train, car, boat, or helicopter, the Lord blessed her to visit numerous countries on six continents. She was employed by St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse's assistant, and later at Astronautics Corporation of American until her retirement in 1990. Mother Ethel Lee Davis, at age 95 years old, departed this life peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2024. She was preceded in death by her: husband, Hugh West Davis Sr.; son, Melvin Davis; brothers, Percy Robinson, Howard Robinson, Jimmy Robinson, and Robert (RB) Robinson; sisters, Elizabeth Love, Priscilla White, Mozella Morris, and Rutha Abrams; and special cousin/sister, Odester Love. She leaves to cherish her remarkable memory: sons, Dr. Hugh West Davis Jr. (Rosie Kathryn) and Nolman James Davis Sr. (Annie Doris) of Milwaukee, WI, Lawrence Allen Davis of Bastrop, LA. and Bernard LeRoy Davis of Los Angeles, CA; one and only precious daughter, Dr. Shirley Ann Scott-Harris of Auburn, AL; brother, Volman Robinson Sr. of Cincinnati, OH; sister, Pearlie Mae Windfield of Chicago, IL; 13 grandchildren, 37 great- grandchildren, and 27 great-great grandchildren, who lovingly called her Mama Ethel or Grandma; and a host of other relatives and friends.
