Mr. John Artee Jefferson

John Ephraim Artee Jefferson was born June 22, 1919 in Gurdon, Arkansas. He was the youngest of eight children born to George and Addie (Ross) Jefferson. On January 28,2013, he was reunited with his parents, seven siblings and hiswife . John, at age thirteen, became a lifelong resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew into manhood living with Ray and Millie [efferson, his oldest brother and sister-in-law who were his surrogate parents. He graduated from Lincoln High School. He confessed his faith in Christ at Calvary Baptist Church. John joined the United States Army. He served in World War II from 1941- 1945. His tour of duty included Australia, Tokyo, and the-Philippine Islands. John retired from the United States Postal Department after thirty-one years of service. However, prior and.during that employment, he exercised an.entrepreneurial desire. He operated a barbecue restaurant; partnered in a nightclub, "The Moon Glow", and a bar, "The Garfield Tap". . John was not often called "John". The family affectionately called him "Pops", "Grandpa", "Uncle Eph" and "Bookie" by his friends and co-workers. He was a tall, handsome, striking figure. In. younger years, his hair was beautifully conked, and in later years, his snowy natural hair was perfectly shaped, nails manicured, and always impeccably dressed in public. At home he sported his shirtless. bibbed overalls or white pants and sleeveless white t-shirt with the same commanding dignity. Bookie was a caring and generous man especially to his family. In his later years he enjoyed gardening, having great pride in his tomatoes. He loved to, cook, and continued to enjoy listening to jazz and blues, and became a computer champion at Solitaire. He was knowledgeable about sports and politics. He was thrilled that his long life had allowed him to vote for and witness the election of President Obama. Presently he showered much TLC (tender loving care) on his cat Blue just like he did the poodle Snow. . In 1965, John was united in holy matrimony with Addie. Morgan. They enjoyed forty- five years of togetherness. His memory is cherished by three children, Glover Morgan III (Gail), Gloria "Gogi" Williams and Helen Morgan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandson, Stacy Morgan (Tr-acey) and fifteen other grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, twelve Jefferson nieces and nephews, many friends and well-wishers.
