Ms. Julia C. Saunders

Julia Corien Saunders was born July 8, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the only child born to the union of the late Robert Crawford Davis, Jr. and Cleo Hortense Jackson. When Julia was two, her parents decided to return to their roots and family in Chicago. She completed her education in the Chicago school system. She attended McCosh Elementary School and graduated from Englewood High School. While she attended junior college, she worked at a couple of jobs but decided to complete her education and graduated from Teacher's College in Chicago. Julia met her future husband while attending college. Julia Davis was united in holy matrimony with Eugene Saunders on March 31, 1951. The union was blessed with two sons. Larrell and Stanley were born in Chicago but the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1955 where the family remains today. She joined St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and later found her new church home at Trinity Episcopal Church. She was an active participant in bible study, book club, and church events like the Awesome Auction which she greatly enjoyed. Although she graduated from Teacher's College in Chicago, Julia began her teaching career in the Milwaukee Public School System as a kindergarten teacher for 31 years. During her time at MPS, she participated in programs for improving education that included a trip to London on education comparisons. Of course, that close to France, she had to visit Paris and Louvre to see the impressionists. In the 1970's she went back to school and earned her Master's Degree in Education. She was asked to consider working in administration in Central Office, but declined because she preferred working in the classroom with children. She loved working with the 5-year-old kindergarten. Family and friends were always important to Julia. The picture of her great great grandmother Sara motivated her to begin her journey into involvement with genealogy. In 1991 after attending a conference, she was one of the participants who encouraged passing a sheet of paper around and gathering names. This led to the creation of the African American Genealogical Society of Milwaukee. Julia was one of the founding members and held various roles in the organization. She also was member of the Protos Social Club, Investment Club, Book Club, Bridge Club and always attended family and friend activities. When Julia moved to The Lutheran Home, she continued participating in the daily activities. She loved Bingo, Wheel of Fortune, Shut the Box and winning. Always the teacher - helper, she looked out for the other residents during game time. She never lost her smile, enjoyed interacting with residents and staff and always felt blessed by the staff and her family. Julia leaves to cherish her memories her loving son Stanley (Betty) Saunders, daughter-in-law Myrelene (Larrell) Saunders, grandchildren, Pamela (Joseph) Bell, Milwaukee, WI, Alexander Saunders, Lakeland, FL, Sara Saunders, Milwaukee, WI, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson, and other loving relatives and friends.
