Ms. Marie Mathews

On September 25, 1946 in Centerville, Mississippi, Marie Mathews was the second child born to her loving parents Edward and Stella (Green) Mathews. She migrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her family in 1949. At an early age Marie received spiritual education at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend E. M. Kelly. Baptized in 1958, she was a life-long member, active in numerous church activities until her health limited her ability to continue. In her youth, Marie was active in the Baptist Training Union, Red Circle Mission and Sunday School. Like her mother, Marie became a dedicated and long serving usher and a member of the United Baptist Ushers. She was also a member ofthe Eva Smart Missionary Circle, as well as the church's Food Pantry, Archives and Kitchen Committees. Marie received her formal education through Milwaukee Public Schools. After graduating from North Division High School she attended Spencerian College where she received a certificate in business administration. Marie worked at and retired early from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Senior Clerk, after thirty years, when the company downsized. She and her sisters, Lee Ester and Marilyn regularly participated in the Company's "Wednesday Nights Bowling League" during the years they all worked there together. As a member of the "Birthday Club", Marie regularly enjoyed lunch and dinner outings with her co-workers, even for many years after retirement. Marie was an extremely kind person who demonstrated compassion and love for people from all walks of life. She liked to cook and her family and friends were recipients of her delicious culinary creations - especially her "Copenhagen Chicken". Marie didn't have children of her own but, she was the special aunt to all of her nieces and nephews. She frequently planned activities for them and other children in the family. She was a family historian who kept up with family events. She especially followed birthdays and events of senior family members. Marie was preceded in death by her father Edward Mathews, mother Stella (Green) Mathews, brother Charles Mathews and niece Sonya Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters Lee Ester Thompson and Marilyn Bates, nieces and nephews Chauntell Thompson, Jamal (LaCal) Bates, and Rudolph Bates III, great nephews Jared Williams and Leland (Erica)Williams, great nieces Jessica Williams, and Brooklyn and Baylee Bates, great-great nieces Aleah ,Alaysia and Aniyah Williams, godchildren Jonathan Green and Alexandria Jones, devoted friends, Mary Govan, Glennie Stephens, and Ephonia Van Dyke, beloved aunt Jennie Haynes of Detroit, Michigan and Susie Matthews of Chicago, Illinois, and a host of cherished cousins and friends.
