Mrs. Martha Louise HIcks

MARTHA LOUISE HICKS was born to life on December 8, 1922, to the union of Henry and Nener Halyard in Bamberg, South Carolina. She received her formal education in Denmark, South Carolina, graduating from Voorhees High School and Voorhees College. Martha received an Associate Degree in Home Economics. She accepted Christ at an early age and was -. united with Union Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Rice in Bamberg, South Carolina. Martha Louise Halyard and Johnnie Hicks, Sr. were united in Holy matrimony on December 27, 1941, and to this union two children were born, Johnnie Hicks,Jr. and Barbara Ann Hicks. In 1946, Martha and Johnnie relocated to Richmond, VA. In January, 1948, Martha and Johnnie relocated to Milwaukee, WI. After relocating to Milwaukee, the Hicks joined Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Melvin J. Battles. Martha was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. She served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher and on numerous boards. Martha also became a member of Sarah's Joy Chapter #8 O.E.S., where she served as a Past Worthy Matron. Martha worked at the Milwaukee County Hospital as a Nurse Assistant. Afterwards, she decided to enroll at UW- Milwaukee to continue her education. While attending college, she worked as a Para Professional in Milwaukee Public Schools. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1972. Martha retired from Milwaukee Public Schools in 1996. In her leisure, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, flower arranging, traveling and word search puzzles. Some of her friends would :find themselves asking "Who are you, Martha Stewart?" She created tissue box holders, dolls, and evening bags. Martha was a loving wife and mother to her children. She loved to entertain family and friends at her home. On December 31,2016, the Lord called her home to glory. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Nener Halyard; husband, Johnnie Hicks, Sr.; brother, John Halyard; and daughter, Barbara Ann Hicks. Martha leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Johnnie Hicks, Jr.; four grandchildren, Lisa (Mark) Moschetto of Boy ton Beach, FL, Diamond Suggs, Johnnie Hicks, III of Madison, WI and Devon Chambliss of Minneapolis, MN; a host of other relatives and special friends. She was an amazing woman with a beautiful spirit that touched the lives of many.
