Ms. Mary Lizzie Henderson

Mary Lizzie Henderson, lovingly known as "Tookie," was born on February 14, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the union of Emily (Wilson) and Earnest Adams. As the eldest daughter-named in honor of both of her beloved grandmothers Mary carried a legacy of strength, grace, and family pride from the very beginning. She was educated in the Louisville Public School System and accepted Christ at an early age, grounding her life in faith as a devoted member of Compel Family Life Center. A woman of remarkable courage and determination, Mary sought a better life for herself and her children, relocating to Milwaukee in the late 1960s. A true "daddy's girl", she moved to be closer to her father, and in doing so, became a guiding light for her entire family. One by one most of her siblings followed her path to Milwaukee-a testament to her leadership, love, and unwavering support. Her home became a refuge, always open, always welcoming. Mary did far more than open her home; she opened her heart, instilling a deep sense of hope and inspiring everyone around her to reach for their dreams. Mary's tenacity defined her life. She retired as a dedicated cook with Milwaukee Public Schools after over 40 years of faithful service. Yet her work ethic extended far beyond one job. As a single mother, Mary tirelessly worked multiple jobs and even opened two businesses, driven by her deep commitment to providing for her family. She was a pillar of strength for her family, meeting life's challenges with quiet determination and always ensuring her loved ones had everything they deserved. Affectionately known as "Tookie" she was the heart and foundation of her family. Dependable, loving, and fiercely protective, she was the one everyone turned to for advice, for comfort, and for strength. She possessed a rare gift of service, generously giving her time, resources, and love, especially to children. Known as the family's "baby whisperer", she had a nurturing spirit that made every child feel safe, cherished, and at home. If you were in her presence, you were cared for; no one ever left her home hungry. Cooking was one of her love languages, and her meals brought people together, creating lasting memories and a deep field of love for everyone who gathered around her table. Even in the face of dementia, Mary's spirit never dimmed. Though her memory sometimes faded, her love for cooking remained-she could still share the essence of her treasured recipes, a reflection of the enduring passion that defined her. Mary Lizzie Henderson departed this life on Monday, June 1, 2026. She was preceded in death by her: parents, Emily and Earnest Adams; beloved husband, Jessie Henderson Sr.; son, Chris Henderson; brothers, Earnest Adams Jr., Carter Adams, Clyde Adams, and Donald Adams; and sister, Robin Pillows (Adams). She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory: loving children, son, Julius Henderson Sr. and daughter, Nichole Henderson. She is also survived by her siblings: Marilyn Adams, Marie Gord-on (Elvis), Ricky (Brenda) Robertson, Perry Adams, Tina (Wilbur) Hewing, Adrian (Robert) Ballard, Angela (Robert) Taylor, and Duane (Myra) Robertson. Her legacy continues through her: grandchildren, Shaquita Henderson, Tynisha Martin, Marquise Henderson, Julius Henderson Jr., Tachara Henderson, Shanae Johnson, Latisha Henderson, Jacquell Henderson, and Cruz Henderson, along with a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Mary's life was a testimony of love, sacrifice, humor, and unwavering strength. She faced life's challenges with courage, uplifted those around her with encouragement and laughter, and built a legacy rooted deeply in family and faith. Her presence was a blessing, her love was a gift, and her memory will forever live in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
