Mrs. Mildred S. Campbell

Mildred Campbell (nee Stamps) was born on July 18th 1930, in Sunflower, Mississippi to Alma Stamps and John Stamps. Her brothers where Nathan "Tommy" Williams, Ernest T. Stamps, A. J Williams, and her sister Maple Stamps. It is here where she learned her early love of gardening, friendship, and compassion towards others. Mildred received her education at the Stevenville High School in Sunflower Mississippi in 1943, continuing there until her freshman year of high school. She returned to school in 1968 in Milwaukee Wisconsin at Milwaukee Area Technical College to obtain her general education development. It wasn't long before Mildred accepted Jesus Christ into her life, becoming a member of New Jerusalem Church in 1940. Later in life she married Demcy Steward, where she brought into this world two children, Sally Mae Steward and Annie Mae Steward. After divorce she once again married, her husband of over fifty years, Van Campbell Jr. on December 24th 1956. After a time in the rural south, the family later moved to the Midwest, migrating to Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1966. After settling roots, the family later expanded, bringing into the world Eugene Campbell in January of 1973, and David Steward (first grandson) in October of the same year. In the mid 1980s, Mildred joined God's Community Project in Milwaukee Wisconsin, once again dedicating her life full- heartedly to the lord. In those years she shared most of her weekdays and Sunday mornings in service to Jesus Christ. She became a member of the church fundraising board, a sister in her church working to better the community, and sung in not only her church choir but was a member of the United Voices. During the following years, Mildred once again became an force in her family. As an influence in her home, she became an avid gardener, made preserves, and followed her passion for baked goods.. On many occasions, she would cook an upward number of 20 pies (sweet potato) for Church fundraisers. She also spent her time sewing, creating quilts, and making dolls. Her life was a pleasant happy life, filled with growing grandchildren (Deidre E. Steward, Royce D. Taylor III, and Jordan Taylor) and two great grandchildren (Hannah R. Steward, and Jonah G. Steward) as well as a son-in-law (Richard Townsend) and granddaughter in law (Angela Steward). It was in the later years of 1998 that Mildred's personal bout with cancer was overcome with the onset of Alzheimer's disease. For the last decade, her battle was a personal one, but also one of personal courage. Being one of the oldest living survivors with this debilitating disease in the United states, her personal bout came to an end September 10th 2012.
