Ms. Mildred Washington

Mildred Washington was born on June 3,1934 in Oak Ridge, Louisiana to the union of Thomas and Essie Washington. MIldred was the second youngest of eleven children. She lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her oldest brother Mertha (Buddy). In January of 1961 Mildred joined Mertha and his wife Zeffie in Milwaukee, WI. There with Mertha and Zeffie as surrogate grandparents, she raised her six children. Mildred worked in several fields of employment. She always devoted herself to taking care of her children. She highly valued education and made sure that her children attended school and did their best. She was an example to her children, teaching us to love God, one another, treat others as we would want to be treated, to see the beauty in life and to take our place in the world and bloom. In 1986, she joined Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church where she was an active member of the Usher Board. She later became a member of Greater Utopian Pentecostal Assembly Holine Church until her transition. She often said, "Elder Hughe said I could come to this church whenever I want to." Mildred was an avid gardener, At any given time on a summer day you could find her working in her yard and competing with her two closest neighbors for the best flower display. Mildred was also known as the "Momma" of the block. When it came to love, disciplining and feeding, she did not discriminate. She loved to cook and Sunday dinners at Mom's became a way of life for her children, grandchildren and anyone who happened to stop by. Some would say that Mildred's sense of humor was a well-kept secret, but for those who knew her, Mildred would always make them laugh. In her later years, Mildred enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren affectionately called her Granny and her great-grandchildren lovingly called her Big Momma and Granny-Granny. You could often find them watching shows from the Price Is Right to Power Rangers and when the great-grandchildren came along she could be found watching Sponge Bob Square Pants. Mildred transitioned to eternal life on Monday, November 26,2018 at 12:51PM, in the presence of her loving family. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving children, Janie Washington MD (Curtis) Marshall, Pamela Barnes, Velessa (Sherman) Hollins, Sharon (Leporise) Brown, Malcolm Washington and Jeffrey Washington; one sister, Elizabeth Barnett, (Monroe, LA); and one brother, George (Ira) Washington (Milwaukee). She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren (Anthony, Brandon, Troy Ir, Corbyn, Christopher, Jeffery [r, Prescott, [amaal, Hope, Devin, Andrea, Justin and Rachel) and 5 great-grandchildren (NayNay, KaMon, Je'lin, Elijah and Ryleigh) and a host of other beloved, devoted family and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Essie Washington, siblings Ola Mae Crosby, Willie Mae Washington, Mertha Lee Washington, Rosetta Hollins, Nathaniel Washington, Louis Washington, Herman Washington and Freddie Bea Sampson.
