Rev. Dr. Sandy Lee Johnson Jr.

Pastor Sandy L. Johnson, .Ir., was born February 19, 1924, in Mlddlet wn, Ohio, to Rev. Sandy L. Johnson, Sr., and Willie Louise Mooreland-Johnson. Pastor Johnson was the eldest of six children, Elma Louise, Pauline, Willie, Grace, and Wilda Jean. His family grew up in a Christian home where his father was a Church of God pastor and evangelist. At age 18, young Sandy Johnson entered the U.S. Army in 19-t2. He served three years during a time when the U.S. military was still segregated by race. His service in the C . Army included the 5th Calvary Brigade (a horse riding brigade) in Fort Clark, Texas, and the Engineering Battalion in Northern Africa. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Pastor Johnson accepted the Lord into his life as his personal savior in his early 20's. In the late 1940's he announced his call to the ministry at his home church, First Church of God in Cincinnati, OH. He studied the Bible both independently and at various colleges. In 19-55 Pastor Johnson became the eighth pastor of First Church of God in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was conferred an Honorary doctorate based on his exemplary Pastoral leadership. During his tenure as pastor in Cincinnati, Pastor Johnson would regularly make long commutes to support the ministry of other congregations. While preaching in Columbus, Ohio, Pastor Johnson met a young Christian woman, Roylene Gracelia Doniphan from Kansas City, Kansas. Pastor Johnson and Sis. Roylene were married June 25, 1%0, in Kansas City, Kansas. While living in Cincinnati, the Johnson's were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer Gayle and Julia Grace. In 1965, after pastoring ten years in Cincinnati, Pastor Johnson and family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to pastor Northside Church of God. As the congregation grew so did their family and Pastor and Sis. Johnson were blessed with their third child, a son, Jon Stanley. Throughout his ministry, Pastor Johnson was a sought after guest preacher both nationally and internationally including places such as Guyana South America. After over 47 years as Pastor, Rev. Dr. Johnson retired from the pastorate at Northside Church of God June 30th, 2013. On December 23, 2014, at the blessed age of 90, Pastor Johnson peacefully transitioned into eternity and went home to be with his Lord and Savior. For those to whom he ministered, Rev. Dr. Johnson will be remembered as a man devoted to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ a thoughtful preacher with insightful pastoral leadership, a wise and learned man faith, and as an humble servant who faithfully attended to the needs of his flock through all the joys and sorrows of life. Pa. .. stor Johnson was a man with an infectious laughter and keen sense of humor, and, for his commanding yet melodic bass voice. For those who knew him best and loved him most he will best will be remembered as a loving husband, a caring father, grandfather and great grandfather who despite the demands of ministry made his family a priority and made the time to attend every graduation, and every' important family event. Rev. Dr. Johnson leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 52 years. Roylene G. Johnson, His siblings Elma Louise Johnson-Tipton, Pauline Johnson-Elliott, Willie J. Johnson (Mollie), children, Jennifer(Milton)Hines, Julia(Melvin) Saffold and Jon Johnson; grandchildren Jasmine (Miguel) Zapata, M.D.; great-grandchildren Miguel and Aameira Zapata, and a host other loving relatives, friends and family in the faith.
