Mr. Tillman Pitts Sr.

On June 12. 2014, the heavenly gates swung open to receive Tillman Pitts, Sr. Tillman was born on January 2. 1918 in Gray. Georgia. He met and married Mary Justine Lamar on June 23, 1946 in Macon. Georgia. This union spanned 68 years and produced 4 children. At the age of 17. in 1936. he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked as a laborer for 3 years. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CC ) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed. unmarried men from relief families. ages 18-25. It was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelr's New Deal that provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal. state and local governments. The CCC was designed to provide jobs for young men, to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States. Tillman enlisted in the US Army in October 1941 and served during World( I War II in Algeria. Naples. Rome. Northern France. and Central Europe. There, he received several medals. including American Defense service Medal, EAMET Service Medal, and World War II Victory medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He relocated to Milwaukee. Wisconsin in 1956 for employment. His wife and children joined him later after getting settled in at his job, staying with his brother William until finding a home. He was employed by Peck Meat Packing as a butcher for a few years until finding a long term employment at Kohl's Food Store as a butcher retiring from there as a foreman. Tillman was a devoted member of St. Mark AME. Church. He worked in the church office after his retirement from Kohl's for several year's. Brothers Luther. Roger. Taylor Jr. Lawyer. William. Paul and John preceded him in death. Sisters Corine. Elvira. and Flita also preceded him in death. A son. Tillman Pitts, Jr. preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife Mary (Justine). two sons Gary Pitts and Daniel (Lori) Pitts: daughter Sharon Probst: and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
