Mrs. Willie Mary Jones

On February 26, 1949, in Forest, Scott County, Mississippi, Lois and Willie Pauline (nee Flowers) Johnson welcomed their seventh of nine (9) children, Willie Mary, into the world, bestowing upon her the names of her mother ("Willie") and her mother's sister ("Mary"), Raised in the embrace of a Christian household, Mary's early years were adorned with the blessings of faith in Jesus Christ, culminating in her baptism at a tender age. At the age of three, Mary's family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she received her primary and secondary education. Her love for learning was evident from a young age, earning her the endearing nickname of "bookworm." After graduating top 5 in her class from Rufus King High School with high honors, Mary studied at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She earned her bachelor's degree in Education and master's degree in English Literature/Composition. Mary's thirst for knowledge extended beyond formal education. She continued to pursue additional graduate courses simply for the love of learning. An ardent admirer of the arts, Mary cherished music, theater, dance, and paintings. She instilled this passion in her children, fostering a rich appreciation for creativity and expression. Mary's life was marked by her unwavering love and devotion to her family. She married the love of her life, Charles Jones, June 2, 1969, and their union was blessed with two children, Charles Jamal and Candace Astacia Pauline. Mary believed deeply in the importance of family and created a warm, nurturing home for her family. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she selflessly supported and cared for others. Mary's compassionate spirit extended beyond her family. She generously donated to charities, including st. Jude, and actively engaged in philanthropic efforts to uplift those in need. Mary stood as a testament to the transformative power of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Her impact as an educator was profound and enduring. Over her 30 years of service within the Milwaukee Public School system, she touched the lives of countless students as a high school English teacher and Advisor. In the classroom, Mary encouraged her students to delve within themselves, mining the recesses of their souls to unearth the beauty, struggles, and dreams that lay dormant within. When conventional methods fell short, Mary fashioned a curriculum, Active Voices, that empowered her students to find their voice, truth, and purpose. "Active Voices" was a manifesto of empowerment, a declaration that every child had a story worth telling. Beyond the classroom, Mary advocated for her students' social needs, rights, and well-being. She fearlessly confronted issues of child abuse, hunger, and racial discrimination, ensuring her students had a voice. She fought tirelessly for education equality and social justice. Mary served as a mentor at UW-Milwaukee, shaping future educators. Her instrumental work also transformed the approach to the NAACP ACT -SO competition, leading Milwaukee students to unprecedented success on the national stage. For Mary, teaching was a sacred art, an endeavor where each stroke of inspiration on the canvas of a child's mind left an indelible mark. Mary didn't merely instruct; she ignited passions, sculpted futures, and nurtured souls. Her connection with her students transcended the confines of academia, weaving a tapestry of compassion and care that lasted lifetimes.
