Mrs. Agnes Mayberry Cobbs

Agnes Cobbs was born on August 3, 1925 to the union of George and Clary Mayberry in Newton, North Carolina. She was the youngest of four children raised in Brooklyn, New York. She received her formal education at East New York High School graduating in 1943. Agnes was united in holy matrimony with Leroy Cobbs and became the mother of six children, Carolyn, Shirley, Sheila, Roy, Ronald and Jamie. She worked as a seamstress during World War II while her husband served in the Armed Services. Sadly when Sheila was just three years old she passed from cancer. In 1956, after a failed marriage Agnes moved with her five children to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Upon arriving in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the family attended the Metropolitan Baptist Church. After four years the family united with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member and taught Sunday School. To support her family Agnes worked as a seamstress and continued her education at the University of Wisconsin. In 1967, she took a position as a program specialist at the University extension in the Center for Urban Community Development, who's mission focused on the urban areas of Milwaukee. Ms. Cobbs has designed and implemented educational programs for low and moderate income people, her subject areas were, energy conservation, outreach, organizing health maintenance and budget counseling. Agnes had many accomplishments in her career some of which were, she was a co-founder of the Harambee Ombudsman Project, she played a key role in getting the Issac Coggs Health Center to locate in the Harambee Community, she successfully organized twenty reading tutoring centers, she develop a unique Outreach Program for low income people, she served on many boards and committees at the state and local level, she received numerous awards and honors for outstanding community services and in 1987 Milwaukee Magazine recognized Ms. Cobbs as one of eighty seven most interesting people in Milwaukee. In her leisure she enjoyed sewing and walking the neighborhood. Her favorite pastime was reading the Word of God. Agnes Mayberry Cobbs departed this life on July 13, 2015. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Cobbs; son, Ronald Cobbs; and parents, George and Clary Mayberry. She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Carolyn Perkins, Shirley Campbell, Roy (Regina) Cobbs and Jamie (Alveretta) Murray; seventeen grandchildren; fourty-three great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great- grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends.
