Mrs. Felicia Thomas-Lynn

Felicia Thomas-Lynn was born August 20, 1964 in Columbus, Georgia to Clifford U. Thomas Sr. and LaRuth Thomas. She transitioned from this life on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 7:30 PM at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin surrounded by family and friends. Felicia was a 25 year journalism veteran of the newspaper industry. She has worked as an education reporter, city hall reporter, urban affairs writer and a columnist. She began her newspaper career in Greenville, SC in 1990 as the education reporter for The Greenville Piedmont and then became the city hall and urban affairs reporter. Her widely read Milwaukee Journal Sentinel column, "Faces of Hope," focused on the lives of everyday people who were able to overcome their circumstances with the help of non-profit organizations willing to lend a helping hand. She has received local, state and national honors for her work, including a national first place short feature writing award from the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors and a first place enterprise reporting award from the South Carolina Press Association. Felicia has also been honored by the Milwaukee Press Club and is a recipient of a Black Excellence Media Award sponsored by the Milwaukee Times. The award honors those in the community "who have made a difference." Thomas-Lynn served as a long-time adjunct professor in the College of Communication at Marquette University, where she taught News Writing and Reporting, as well as Public Affairs. She also served as a lecturer in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She was a member and past president of the Milwaukee Press Club, as well as a member and past president of the Wisconsin Black Media Association. Under her leadership, the WBMA won the highest recognition for an individual chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists: Chapter of the Year. She was also a founding member of the South Carolina Upstate Association of Black Journalists in Greenville and served as its president. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Cream City Chapter of The Links, Inc. and the Milwaukee Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc......................Felicia Thomas-Lynn Communication/Journalism Scholarship Fund..............In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Al Hurvis/ADAMM Education Foundation. She worked as an education reporter, urban affairs writer and a columnist. Her career began at the Greenville Piedmont and culminated with her widely read column in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "Faces of Hope". She studied at the University of Georgia and Columbus State University and earned her Bachelor's degree in Speech Communication and Rhetoric in 1987. This scholarship fund in her memory will provide the opportunity of education for students who share the same passion for writing and communicating that Felicia had.
