Mr. Julius Lamont Welch

Julius Lamont Welch, affectionately known to many as Lamont, was born to Joseph Sr. and Idella (Whitfield) McCants on March 9, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After the death of ldello. due to complications from childbirth, Joseph Sr. moved back to Atmore, Alabama where family and close friends were able to help him with his two young sons. A special couple, Henry and Leverta Welch, who were unable to have children of their own, lovingly cared and provided for Lamont and legally adopted him at the age 'of 5. It was such a blessing for Lamont to be raised by two families! At an early age, Lamont was baptized at Gaines Chapel AME Church in Atmore and remained faithful to Christ throughout his early childhood and adult years. Lamont completed his formal education at Pleasant Hill Grade School Freemanville Middle School, and Escambia County High School. After spending many summers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with Joseph Sr. and his wife Marva, who was a second mom to Lamont, he decided to relocate back after graduation and pursue employment. In 1972, Lamont worked at Schlitz Brewery Company as a bottle packer. Eventually, he decided to go into the manufacturing industry and worked at the A.O. Smith Corporation for 25 years, completing various jobs. After an injury on the job, Lamont was forced into early retirement. To further enjoy his retirement, Lamont decided to relocate to northern Wisconsin where he could enjoy the peace and serenity of life. After temporarily living in different cities, he decided to make Kaukauna, Wisconsin his home, where he gained friends who became his extended family. In his spare time, Lamont enjoyed playing cribbage, 2-way solitaire, listening to music (with his favorite song being "Hello" by Adele), and rooting for whatever team played against the Packers. On Monday, February 16, 2026, God called, and Lamont peacefully left this world. Lamont was preceded in death by his: birth parents, Joseph Sr. and Idella; adoptive parents, Henry and Leverta Welch; and his youngest brother, Edison 'Toppy' McCants. He leaves to cherish his memory: brother, Joseph McCants Jr.; sister, Sondra (Robert) Thirston; mother, Marva (Odell) Smith; sisters-in-law, Nada McCants and Alicia McCants; nieces, Natasha McCants, Matiya McCants, Chantell (Ron) Sain, and RaShonda Stewart; nephews, Joseph McCants III, Richard Thirston, and Ryan McCants; and a host of great- nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. He also leaves devoted friends, Wanda and Bob Russell, Brandon Lemke, Kyle Lenhart, Jackie Yops. Rae Lyn Johnson, Sherry Wnek, JR Skenandore, Dave Tadych, Dean Hill, and Lisa Stadtmueller.
