Ms. Mary Allen Labertha Thompson

Mary Allen Labertha Sims Thompson was born April 23, 1935, in Holly Springs, Mississippi to the union of Vera Lucille Boone and Allen Aldolphers Sims. She was the second oldest of 6 children. Mary accepted Christ at the age of 11 years old, at Providence Baptist Church and joined Anderson CME Church, where she participated in Sunday School and BYPU. She graduated from Rosenwood High School and worked at the North Mississippi Hospital, in Holly Springs, until she moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1958. In Milwaukee, Mary United with Tabernacle Community Baptist church in 1959, under the leadership of the late Rev. J. L. Williams. She was united in holy matrimony to Ollie Thompson, and during that union, blessed by the birth of her two children Bruce Allen Thompson and Brenda Arnel Thomspon. Mary's work life included working 2 years for Adelman Laundry, 3 years for Urban Day Care, 3 years for Holy Angels Day Care, and 29 years for the Milwaukee Mental Health Complex, where she served in the food services department, until her retirement. Mary faithfully participated in various Tabernacle ministries; including the Gospel Chorus, Sunday School, Mission Circle 2 and kitchen committee. She loved helping other people, especially children and the elderly. Rather than accepting pay for her help, she always asked that you "save your money, just help someone else!" When not working, Mary loved fishing, spending time with her immediate and church family and traveling back to Mississippi and other states to visit family members. She also especially enjoyed gardening, which lead her to Community gardening and sharing vegetables with friends and neighbors. As a bonus, she learned to sew and gave gifts of aprons and quilts, which will serve as a legacy of her love throughout her family and community for years to come. Mary, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, friend and servant, is known for adding life to any gathering with her comical antics and matter of fact antidotes. She could always be counted on to give straight forward life lessons to her daughter, grandson, nieces, nephews.; and countless numbers of their friends. Her down to earth personality and embracing spirit drew neighborhood youth to regularly visit her home with her children and continue to check on her, long after the death of her son Bruce in 1978, and when Brenda moved away more than ten years later. She was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Allen Thompson; parents Vera Lucille Boone and Allen Sims; siblings, sister, Dorothy Braddock, and brothers, Willie Lee Sims, James Rodgers Sims and Eddie Frank Sims; and several nieces and nephews. She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Brenda Arnel Thompson-Jones (Michael), Las Vegas, NV; grandson, Montreal Smith, Milwaukee, WI; brother, Richard, Eugene Sims, Holly Springs, MS; Sisters-in-law, Lizzie R. Sims, Milwaukee, WI; Sagretta Sims, Holly Springs, MS, scores of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
