Mr. Nearlin Carter Jr.

Captain Nearlin Carter Jr., a beloved father, husband, and community pillar, passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on March 28, 1941, he was the fourth eldest of nine children born to Caroline Jones and Nearlin Carter Sr. At just 17 years old, Nearlin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 24, 1959. Over two decades, he served his country with honor and distinction, rising through the ranks to retire as a Captain on May 31, 1979. Nearlin married Vivian DeLoris Montgomery, and from their union came three cherished children: Tracey LeAnn Carter, Nearlin Carter III, and Kevin LeRoy Carter. Though their marriage ended, they remained united in their shared love for their children. Vivian and Nearlin also shared mutual respect, and her memory continues to be cherished by those who knew and loved her. Tragically, Vivian passed away in a car accident while on a road trip with her sisters when their children were still young. Nearlin later found profound love and partnership with Sadie Cleo Garrison, who became his devoted wife and life companion for nearly fifty years until her passing. Their bond was a testament to deep affection, shared joy, and mutual respect. Together, they created a life filled with meaningful moments—dancing, traveling, playing card games, enjoying the beach, and cherishing the embrace of family and friends. Their compatibility and shared love for life were evident in everything they did. When Sadie became ill, Nearlin was steadfastly by her side, providing her with loving care and support until the very end. United in purpose, they nurtured a blended family rooted in love and unity, raising Gwendolyn (Carter) Jackson, Etta Yevonne Carter, Tracey LeAnn Carter, Nearlin Carter III and Kevin LeRoy Carter with unwavering care and devotion. Nearlin and Sadie’s love also extended to those they helped raise as their own, including Sean and Kiley, Etta’s sons, whom Nearlin loved and guided as a father figure. After Sadie’s passing, Kiley demonstrated extraordinary dedication, regularly traveling from Minnesota to Milwaukee to care for Nearlin. Recently, Nearlin Carter III (Butch) also moved back home, joining Janice Taylor (dad’s companion) and Kiley in providing full-time care for their beloved father and grandfather. Their collective love and support ensured Nearlin’s final days were filled with comfort and peace. Later, Nearlin embraced a special bond with Pauline Thomas. Although they connected later in life, their relationship was just beginning to grow, and they kept in touch, nurturing their connection as father and daughter.. Nearlin was also blessed with another daughter, Sabrina Ivy, whose presence brought love and joy to the family. Their bond developed over time, and she became a cherished part of his life. In his later years, Nearlin found companionship and joy with Janice Taylor. Together, they dreamed of a future filled with love and adventure. When Nearlin faced a debilitating stroke, Janice stayed unwaveringly by his side, providing care and steadfast support through every challenge. Her love and devotion never wavered, and she remained with him until his final breath. Nearlin shared a deep bond with his siblings: Irene Parker, Corene Carter, Lorene Horton, Annabelle Cannon, Melvin Carter, Stephanie Woods, Joann Carter, and Errol Carter. Today, only Stephanie Woods and Errol Carter survive him. Their relationships were marked by love, laughter, and cherished memories that enriched their family legacy. Nearlin’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: From Gwendolyn’s (Daniel) children: Monique DaShawn Jackson, Marcel Danté Jackson, and Mendell Daniel Jackson; and his great-grandchildren Kianté DeSean Jackson, Kamari Daniel Sanchez, and Kymani Daunte Jackson. From Etta’s children: Kiley Sorale Demery (Jenna) and Sean Micheletté Whittington; his great-grandchildren Kayla Shanté Demery, Kiley Sorale Demery Jr., and Amaya Etta Jane Demery and his great, great-granddaughter, K’onni KiLynn Davis. From Tracey’s (Melvin) children: Johnny Wade Middleton and James Woods; and his great-grandchildren, Kaleb Middleton, Oakland Middleton, Silver Christman, Ézykiah (Momma’s) Woods and Bellarose Woods. From Nearlin Carter III’s child: Jessica Burgess (Mike), Trinity Dement, Addison Burgess, Ava Burgess and Arya Burgess. From Kevin’s (Angie) child: Kevin Carter Jr (Jessica), Donovan Hamsher, and Quianna Spencer; and his great-grandchildren, Abigail Carter, Trinity Reyes and Nalley Reyes. From Sabrina’s child: Skylar (need Skylar’s last name). Nearlin’s love poured out equally to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart and life. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were touched by his love, wisdom, and unwavering support. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sadie Cleo Carter (May 22, 2016); his daughter Gwendolyn (Carter) Jackson (May 1, 2022); and his son-in-law, Sgt. Major Daniel Jackson, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps (June 8, 2024). He had a rich and vibrant life, filled with passions that reflected his strong and loving character. As a dedicated Marine, he served four tours in Vietnam and was recognized with numerous commendations for his service. Among his honors were the Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Expert Badge, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with three stars, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. These honors stand as a testament to his bravery, skill, and unwavering commitment to his country. A skilled boxer in the Marine Corps, Nearlin earned a reputation as a formidable fighter, showcasing his determination and resilience. After retiring from the military, he relocated the family from California to Milwaukee and began a second career as the Manager of Miller’s Warehouse Distribution and Shipping Department, overseeing operations with precision and dedication. Later, he worked for Milwaukee County, managing several golf courses, where his leadership and love for the game shone through. Nearlin was also an avid golfer, winning numerous trophies that reflected his competitive spirit and passion for the sport. Nearlin’s love for reading enriched his sharp mind, and his presence brought warmth wherever he went—especially at George Webb Restaurant, his daily gathering spot for years. There, he bonded with close friends like Glover, Gale, Arthur, Jay, John, and others, sharing laughs and creating cherished memories. In retirement, Nearlin was honored by the American Legion, where he was slated to serve as President. Though unable to fulfill the role due to health challenges, the Legion respected and admired him so deeply that they held the position open for a full term in his honor. Despite his stern and commanding appearance, Nearlin was known for his kindness, warmth, and deep care for others. He was a protector, a teacher, and a guiding influence on both family and friends. His wisdom, humor, and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Captain Nearlin Carter Jr.’s life was a testament to love, service, and resilience, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
