Mr. Charles Herman Tillman Sr.

Charles Herman Tillman was born on April 28, 1941, in Brookhaven, Mississippi to the union of John Butler Tillman and Edna Mae Smith Tillman. Charles was the third child of six children from this union. Born into a family of strong Christian values Charles accepted Christ at a very early age, where he and his family worship at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. Charles early education was at Progress Elementary/High School. The schools were merged by the twelfth grade, finishing at Eva Harris High School in 1961. While attending high school, Charles was a star basketball player. His coach, Mr. Melton McMorris talked very highly of Charles and would reminisce every time he would see him. Charles was very charming and extremely handsome. Many girls were very attracted to him, but Charles was attracted to this young woman in the eleventh grade named Joan Artitrisha Dillon. He would walk ten miles to visit her in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi. They continued to date after graduation while Joan was in college and Charles relocated to Chicago IL. After dating for five years, Charles asked the love of his life for her hand in marriage. June 1, 1963 Charles and Joan were married. Their union was blessed with three children: Darla, Charles Jr. and Kenneth. He moved his family in 1969 to Milwaukee, WI for better job opportunities. He was employed by American Motors and later retired from Chrysler after thirty three years of service. Charles was a hard worker, driving five days a week, and 100 miles round trip to work every day for his family. Charles was stylish, charismatic, handsome, humble, analytical, loving, kind, spiritual and faithful to his wife of sixty years. According to the Bible what is a perfect man? A man who upholds righteousness, honors his faith, is capable of unconditional love and possesses gentleness is ideal and perfect. Charles was not only that way with his family but also toward others. Charles enjoyed and loved his family, and all life had to offer; beautiful cars, trips to the casino, traveling south, and playing cards. He loved his daughter Darla; she was the apple of his eye. He cherished the moments his sons and grandsons spent with him watching sports and debating. Charles received such pleasure in spoiling and loving his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charles not only touched his family lives but the life of many with his kindness, sense of humor and generosity. On Monday, April 10, 2023 at 8:32AM, the Lord called Charles home. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother Edna Mae Smith Tillman and father John Butler Tillman. One sister: Eva Nell Tillman and two brothers, Joe Harvey Tillman and John Albert Tillman. He leaves to cherish his memory of sixty years his loving and devoted wife, Joan Artitrisha Dillon Tillman. One daughter, Darla (Frederick) Washington of Chicago IL; Two sons, Charles Tillman, Jr. and Kenneth (Sylvia) Tillman of Milwaukee, WI; Two brothers, Steve Tillman of Brookhaven, MS; Robert Curtis (Charlotte) of Hattiesburg, MS; One sister, Mattie Coley of . Detroit, MI; Four sister-in- laws, Catherine Fairman and Barbara Williams of Chicago, IL; Laverne Chinn of Jackson, MS; Florence Tillman of Atlanta GA. Eight grandchildren: Patrice Tillman, Jaquice Tillman, Justin (Kyra) Tillman, Kendell Tillman all of Milwaukee WI; Charmaine Tillman and Charles Allen Tillman of Dallas, TX; Alisha Washington of Chicago IL; Abrenia Hike Tillman of Columbus, Ohio; Seven great-grandchildren; One Aunt, Kay Frances Smith. Special friends; Dorothy Black and family of Harvey IL, George Tillman and family, Paul Hunter, BO Garrett, Christopher and Tiffany Moore, Brian Spears, Ms. Mary Gilmore, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Williams; Special daughter; Tish Ruff; step grandchildren; Shara and Terance Edwards along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
